All Blacks crash the Internet with Akira Ioane highlights

There are sometimes not enough words to describe a performance like Akira Ioane’s against Australia on Sunday, and sometimes there is not enough space on the Internet to share his highlights, as the All Blacks flanker’s display has gone viral.

The 26-year-old beat seven defenders, made two clean breaks and ran for 88 metres against the Wallabies, assisting tries for both Will Jordan and Anton Lienert-Brown, both of which he could have probably scored himself. His one handed dummy in the build-up to Jordan’s try was worthy of flooding the Internet in itself. The All Blacks have since plastered his match highlights on Twitter.

Ioane started in all three Bledisloe Cup Tests this year, as the All Blacks produced the clean sweep over their rivals. For a player that at one point seemed to be consistently overlooked by All Blacks selectors, he taken his opportunity with both hands since making his debut in November last year. He now looks to be a safe bet to start in the No6 shirt against South Africa at the end of the Rugby Championship.

The win means the All Blacks have maximum points in their opening two matches of the Rugby Championship this year, and sit one point ahead of the Springboks, who failed to pick up a bonus point in one of their two wins over Argentina. Form suggests that the All Blacks will beat the Pumas over the next two rounds, while South Africa will overcome the Wallabies, even on Australian soil.

That means the tournament is shaping up to have a final two decisive rounds when the All Blacks and South Africa come head to head for the first time since their pool stage encounter at the 2019 World Cup, which the All Blacks won. Since then, however, the Springboks have won the World Cup, risen to world number one and won a British & Irish Lions series.
