On the eve of the 2019 Super Rugby season starting, there are some mouth-watering match-ups to commence one of the most exhilarating rugby competitions in the world.

One match that is particularly exciting is the Melbourne Rebels’ visit to the Brumbies. The Australian conference is up for grabs this season, and every club will hope to stake a claim. The Rebels showed a lot of promise last season, but petered away as the season went on. However, they have recruited some new faces, none more noticeable than Quade Cooper.

The mercurial fly-half is teaming up with Will Genia once again, as both are set to start at the GIO Stadium tomorrow:

This will be the first time that the pair have played alongside each other in Super Rugby in almost four years. During their time at the Reds, they formed one of the most devastating half-back partnerships in world rugby. At their peak, they guided the Reds to their first Super Rugby title in 16 years. Opposition defences simply could not handle the attacking brand of rugby that the Queensland side were playing, which was spearheaded by Genia and Cooper.

The duo were immense against the Crusaders in the final, and here is the video of them in that historic final:

The 2011 season was Genia and Cooper at their absolute best, as they also steered Australia to their first Tri-Nations title in ten years.

They could not bring the World Cup back to Australia later that year, and an ACL injury at the end of that tournament slowed Cooper’s career down. Some will say that he has never reached the heights of the 2011 season again, and that was particularly shown last season when he was completely dropped by the Reds’ head coach Brad Thorn.

However, Rebels fans will be hoping that the pair can recreate that magic this season at AAMI Park.
