New crazy scenes emerge in France after Bayonne earn promotion

One week after the town of La Rochelle went viral with their celebrations of the club winning the Heineken Champions Cup, the town of Bayonne came out in force to rival that following their promotion back to the Top 14.

Bayonne beat Mont de Marsan 49-20 on Sunday at the GGL Stadium in the promotion final, despite the losers actually topping the Pro D2 table. This sparked celebrations in Bayonne akin to the party seen the week before in La Rochelle.

Mont de Marsan still have another chance to make the Top 14 next season as they take on Perpignan this Sunday, who finished the Top 14 second from bottom. Unfortunately for Bayonne, they will not get the chance to take on their bitter rivals Biarritz in the Basque Derby next season, as the two clubs are swapping leagues following Biarritz’s bottom place finish. That game would have had some extra spice added to it after Biarritz earned promotion to the Top 14 at the end of last season by beating Bayonne in a penalty shootout.
