The angle that shows PSDT has his Bok teammate to blame for sickening red card

Now to be clear, it was 100 percent a red card for South Africa’s Pieter-Steph du Toit against France. 100 percent. The flanker produced the clearest headbutt possible on 12 minutes when clearing out Jonathan Danty in Marseille on Saturday, and was rightfully red carded by Wayne Barnes.

But plenty of people online have been saying in the wake of the first half red that du Toit was pushed by his back row teammate Kwagga Smith, and when rewatching the clearout that is undeniably true.

Du Toit was unbalanced after tripping on Uini Atonio before Smith pushed him and effectively launched him into the face of Danty. Of course, he could have definitely dived in another direction to avoid making contact, but Smith is partly to blame for the red as well.

Then again, had the ex World Rugby player of the year avoided making contact with the head of Danty, it probably would have been a red card for centre Damian de Allende, who also smashed into Danty’s head with his shoulder. He had no excuse, and there is actually a pretty good case that this could have been a double red card.

Take a look at the red and decide for yourself:
