Rugby world cannot believe Wallaby was not red carded for ‘dog act’

The rugby world has been left sickened by a clearout by Wallabies lock Darcy Swain that forced All Blacks centre Quinn Tupaea to leave the field with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Swain targeted Tupaea’s knee in a clearout late in the first half, which resulted in referee Mathieu Raynal showing him a yellow card, but plenty of people online feel that it deserved more than that.

World Rugby Law 9.20.d states: “A player may lever the jackler out of the contest at the ruck but must not drop their weight onto them or target the lower limbs.” This is clearly what happened in Melbourne, with a serious outcome for the All Black, who was already on the field as a replacement for David Havili.

Former Samoa international Junior Poluleuligaga wrote on Twitter: “Poor Tupaea. Speedy recovery to the young kid. Looks like a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Hope Swain he’s gets a long ban for that dog act.”

Former England fly-half Andy Goode wrote: “Great call from Ben Whitehouse the TMO on calling out the clear out by Darcy Swain targeting the leg/knee of Quinn Tupaea who’s now hobbled off injured. Should have been a red card not a yellow though.”

Take a look at the clearout:
