Proof retiring All Black Dane Coles is still a freak of nature in No2 shirt
Dane Coles might be nearing the end of his career, but if anyone thought the 36-year-old is no longer the athletic beast he was ten years ago, think again.
The 85-cap All Black has redefined what a hooker can do over the last decade, bringing some unmatched pace and athleticism to the black No2 shirt. While some might think that he is not necessarily the force he was earlier in his career, he has shown some glimpses in this Rugby Championship that he is certainly no slouch.
A clip has been shared online recently of the Hurricanes hooker up against Argentina in the opening round of the Rugby Championship, where he tracked back from his halfway line to prevent a try in the second half. In doing so he was able to keep up with Pumas centre Lucio Cinti, who is not only a back, but 13 years the junior of the All Black. That is a clear sign that Coles is still a force to be reckoned with at the World Cup even though he is in the twilight of his career.
Take a look:
I know I’m late to this, but have you noticed Dane Coles’ speed???
He was faster than Lucio Cinti. And he’s got like 40 pounds on the inside centre.#ARGvNZL #AllBlacks #TRC2023 pic.twitter.com/3elPttIrxK

After announcing that he will retire after the World Cup, Coles said on the All Blacks website: “Thank you to Pōneke FC, Wellington, the Hurricanes and the All Blacks for giving me my dream job.
“I’m looking forward to enjoying the year and creating some new memories.”
New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson added: “I would like to congratulate Dane on an outstanding career that has brought fans so many special moments at all levels of the game.
“He has been an outstanding servant of the All Blacks, the Hurricanes and Wellington who always puts the team first. We look forward to celebrating this final year of his career with him and his family.”
All Blacks coach Ian Foster added: “Dane is a hundred percent committed, loves his family, loves his rugby. And there is no doubt about his absolute commitment to the Hurricanes and the All Black jersey.”
