120kg former Bok A lock shows superhuman speed to shame backs

No lock should ever be able to outpace a winger. Ever. That is just an unerring fact of rugby. Or at least it should be. But Kobelco Kobe Steelers lock JD Schickerling made us question everything that we thought we knew to be true about the game of rugby.

The former South Africa A international scored a try against the NTT Communications Shining Arcs Tokyo Bay-Urayasu earlier this month but it was not an ordinary lock’s try. It was not a pick and go, it was not from a lineout, it was not a close range carry, it was a a 60 metre gallop in which he left everyone trailing in his wake.

Those behind him included the Shining Arcs right wing. That is worth repeating. The 120kg, 2.03m lock left a winger unable to catch up with him.

Now he did have a head start, and there was a bit of strategic blocking along the way, but there is a train of backs trying to stop the lock as he rampages up field and they all fail.

This is the type of thing that needs to be seen to be believed, and thankfully it has been shared online by Jacob McDonald online. Take a look:
