74-cap France international can only laugh after bizarre treatment from Marler

Joe Marler seems to be solely on a rugby pitch to wind up the opposition, and that has worked out well for him in the past and has also got him into a fair amount of trouble.

But France and Racing 92 centre Gael Fickou did the wise thing on Sunday against Harlequins at La Defense Arena by just laughing off some of Marler’s antics. This was specifically concerning a ruck, where the England loosehead picked up the centre and carried him on his shoulders for the duration of the ruck. Though that it pretty humiliating for a player to be manhandled like that, Fickou just laughed it off.

This was all part of an epic between the two sides, which Racing 92 snatched at the death 30-29 after initially being in a commanding lead. Both sides are in the hunt for qualification for the knockouts, and ex Quins and current Racing centre Francis Saili., who scored on Sunday, said after the match that the Parisian outfit have a “foot in the door”.

“It was a massive win for us,” he said. “To put it into context we came into the game after four losses and a draw, so it was nice to get another ‘W’ on our resume.

“It was a tough match out there and I’m bloody tired, although it was bloody nice to score against my old club.

“We knew it was going to be quick and we knew they were going to throw everything at us, given the brand of rugby they play. They are similar to us in they just throw the ball around.

“It turned into a bit of an arm wrestle going back and forth, especially with the number of yellow cards we had. I’m just glad we came out on top.

“This win gives us a foot in the door, although we know getting another foot in the door is going to be an uphill battle. It’s not going to be an easy task for us to go over to Leinster.

“They are really hot at the moment. We will analyse them, but we need to look at ourselves and see what positives we can do so we can throw everything at them.”
