Retiring Frenchman was truly world class on his day
After former France centre Wesley Fofana announced his retirement from rugby yesterday, Yoe Rugby shared a highlights reel of his best tries.
The 34-year-old centre retired from international rugby in 2019 after the World Cup after winning 48 caps, but he announced his retirement from club rugby completely yesterday, brining his 14-year stay at ASM Clermont Auvergne to an end.
Fofana suffered a career blighted by injuries, which explains why he did not have as many caps as a player of his calibre should have. However, when fit he was one of the best inside centres in the game.
He was not necessarily the biggest centre but he was able to break plenty of tackles partly due to his exceptional running lines. There have not been many players in recent years that were able to slice through the middle of a team’s defence quite in the way Fofana did, and that is shown by the montage shared by Yoe Rugby. Fofana cited the fact that his body cannot keep up with the demands of professional rugby as the reason he had retired in an Instagram post yesterday. He wrote on social media:
“After 15 years with ASM Clermont Auvergne and the beautiful family of French rugby, a new page is turning for me.
“These last two years have sometimes been difficult to manage… An obvious observation that my body can no longer take the level of requirement that professional rugby now demands.
“I therefore choose to end of my career.
“A big thank you to the ASM for all these years by my side, these extraordinary sporting moments experienced together.
“Thank you to my loved ones and all those who supported me.
“And of course to you, rugby enthusiasts, who make the very essence of this sport. Thank you for everything.”
