Eddie Jones outcast makes case for being fastest player in Premiership

There are some seriously fast players in the Gallagher Premiership at the moment, many of whom showed off their pace in round one over the weekend.

Louis Rees-Zammit reminded us all that he has some real pace to burn against Wasps on Sunday, as did Henry Arundell the day before against Worcester Warriors. But maybe the most impressive display of pace over the entire weekend was Adam Radwan’s against Quins.

The Newcastle Falcons wing scored a try in the first half at Kingston Park, taking advantage of a turnover in his own half to sprint down the touchline more or less unopposed- or at least he made it look unopposed. No Quins tackler was able to get close to him, and that includes winger Nick David who is certainly no slouch.

This was a seriously impressive display of pace from a player that will want a make a statement this season ahead after falling behind in Eddie Jones’ England pecking order. After missing out on England’s tour of Australia this summer and with a year to go until the World Cup, Radwan will need plenty of moments like this to work his way back into Jones’ England squad.

Radwan was not the only player to show a clean pair of heels on Saturday, as his fellow wing Nathan Earle got in on the action a few minutes later with a length of the field run after intercepting in his own 22.

Despite having pace like that out wide, Newcastle were unable to come away with the win in the season opener, falling 40-31. Newcastle boss Dave Walder said after the match: “It will take a while for us to get to a level where it is the norm for the players to play an exciting brand of rugby, but it’s a start today. It’s a mindset change, but the attitude from the players has been outstanding.”
