World Cup glory guaranteed for Wales after the GOAT teaches Biggar all he knows
Warren Gatland has probably spent almost every second since the Six Nations questioning why he ever returned to coach Wales, and in those brief moments when he is not, he is probably fearing how the side are going to perform at this year’s World Cup.
In a pool with Australia and Georgia, who both beat Wales in the autumn, as well as Fiji, who knocked them out of the 2007 World Cup, Gatland knows that he has a task on his hands just to get out of the pool stages, let alone do anything in the knockout rounds.
But Wales’ luck might be about to change after a training session in Toulon this week. That is because the Top 14 outfit were graced by club legend, and World Cup legend, Jonny Wilkinson. The former world champion was seen giving a training session with his former side this week, including what looked to be one-on-one training with Toulon and Wales fly-half Dan Biggar.
As far as personal coaching goes for Biggar, it does not get much better than Wilkinson, who not only made back to back World Cup finals, but is the tournament’s highest point scorer. With Biggar’s bizarre short-tugging and Wilkinson’s iconic foot tapping, the pair surely spent hours discussing their peculiar kicking rituals.
Not only did Wilkinson turn up at Toulon’s training, but brothers Delon and Steffon Armitage did as well. Alongside Wilkinson, the Armitage brothers were part of the Toulon squad that dominated the Heineken Champions Cup a decade ago. Though Toulon are not in that competition this season, they are still in the Challenge Cup, where they will face Benetton in the semi-finals. They are also going strong in the Top 14 this season, where they sit in fourth place with just a few rounds remaining.
