Munster captain hangs his head in shame over hero’s X-rated interview
Munster’s John Hodnett can be forgiven for being somewhat overexcited on Saturday after scoring the winning try and being named man of the match in the United Rugby Championship final win over then reigning champions the Stormers in their own back yard in Cape Town. But it is hard to say whether he can ever be forgiven for his foul-mouthed tirade in his post match interview, leaving millions of fans covering their ears in sheer horror and disgust.
After awarding his back row colleague with the man of the match medal, Munster Peter O’Mahony stood there helplessly as he listened to Hodnett pollute the airwaves across the world with filth.
In truth, though explicit, Hodnett’s interview was not that bad, particularly given how pumped up he must have been. However, it did provide good viewing watching O’Mahony hang his head in embarrassment or shame for his teammate.

Having entered the match as underdogs despite defeating Leinster in Dublin two weeks before, Munster pulled off an epic victory to secure their first piece of silverware in 12 years. After scoring their 76th minute winner, Hodnett told URC TV: “It is some win for us. It’s massive, a whole year of work, and it is unbelievable to win it and say we are champions.
“We kept going and never gave up. It’s huge for us and hasn’t at all sunk in.”
O’Mahony said: “We performed well in the first half, and we probably should have been a couple more scores up, but credit the Stormers – their defence was excellent.
“We showed incredible resilience and skills to score a well-worked try with five minutes to go. It was a tough surface and tough conditions with a wet ball.
“We went behind but we stuck to our guns. We got back into it and the last five minutes were class.”
