Ellis Genge cuts future teammate in half with monster tackle

Leicester Tigers captain Ellis Genge sent quite an emphatic message to his future club Bristol Bears on Saturday as his side steamrollered them at Welford Road.

There was one moment in particular that will make all the Bears squad, particularly lock Joe Joyce, relieved that the England loosehead will be on their side next season rather than lining up against them.

Joyce will think twice about running into Genge at training next season, as he did not come out on top at Welford Road, being subject to a particularly brutal tackle by the prop. The tackle saw Genge pick up and drive all 119kg of the lock back about five metres before dumping him on his backside.

The video was shared by Rucked Over on Twitter, which also says that Genge could be heard saying in the mic after “Hey, Joyce, well done on 150 games. 130 off the bench right?” The pair were formerly teammates during Genge’s first stint at Bristol, so that was probably not as offensive as it appears written down.

The 56-26 win kept the Tigers firmly at the top of the Gallagher Premiership, while Bristol languish in tenth.

Genge’s future director of rugby Pat Lam said: “The score doesn’t reflect the effort a lot of our boys put in.

“Unfortunately, what it reflected was the silly, stupid turnovers that we gave – that’s sort of the story of our season, that someone makes a mistake and then the boys have to work hard to cover it up.

“Even right to the very end the boys are hanging in there and we probably put ourselves under pressure, but when you turn over against a team that’s in form, a team that’s having their day, it makes it hard.

“I’m proud of the effort, but certainly there were some poor mistakes from some individuals.

“Leicester are the gold standard at the moment. This is their time. They’re doing well, and fair play to them.

“Everyone has their day and we will get our day back.”
