Goal line drop out goes catastrophically wrong
Credit to Harlequins fly-half Will Edwards for trying to play attacking rugby against Northampton Saints on Tuesday in the Premiership Rugby Cup by taking a short goal line drop out. Unfortunately for him, his execution left plenty to be desired.
This was maybe the worst ever goal line drop out, as his quick kick provided Saints flanker Kayde Sylvester possibly the easiest try anyone has ever scored. The kick barely made a metre, and came nowhere near any Quins players. All Sylvester had to do was dive on the ball to give his side the first try of the match.
Harlequins were leading 7-0 at this point, but this try kickstarted Northampton’s performance, as they came away 49-29 winners at Franklin’s Gardens.
Take a look at the try:
Northampton Saints coach Matt Ferguson told the Northampton Chronicle: “The guys that we mentioned here will give Dows (Phil Dowson) a sleepless night tonight. The team’s not named for Saturday yet.
“We said from the very start that this whole process was about allowing senior players to return from injury, and you saw Ehren Painter get some minutes tonight.
“We talk about starting with some momentum and we showed up really well in that first half by putting our game on them. We had go-forward and all the things we talk about in our Saints DNA.
“The backs can only play on the back of a good platform and there were some good contact skills.”
