‘He sees rugby differently’: Siya Kolisi on Lukhanyo Am

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi is the latest player to lavish his teammate Lukhanyo Am with praise this week.

Speaking ahead of his side’s contest with Australia tomorrow in Adelaide, Kolisi was quizzed about his Springboks and Sharks teammate, who many rate as the best player in the world at the moment. Despite the loss to the All Blacks in round two of the Rugby Championship, Am was sensational, scoring a try and threatening all game. Since then, Am has been one of the most talked about players in the game, and Kolisi had his say as well.

“He’s been amazing for us for very long time,” the World Cup winning captain said. “I think it took a while, I think, for people to see that. And I think the work that he’s been doing with coach [Mzwandile] Stick, you know, and his personality is also, you know, he always wants to learn and is willing to learn. He wants to talk to other players. He wants to hear opinions and he sees rugby differently. And I think the best thing about Lukhanyo, he plays rugby the same way as he did for Border [Bulldogs], like his love for the game since he was a kid.

“That’s what I love about him and he’s always willing to learn. But yeah, he’s been become an important player to the team. And yeah hopefully tomorrow he can just keep growing on that, and we as a team can do our best to make sure that he gets the possible opportunities on the field tomorrow.”

South Africa and Australia play first tomorrow, meaning the winner of that match will go to the top of the Rugby Championship table, although that may only be temporarily ahead of the All Blacks’ clash with Argentina.
