MLR produces stunning try of the year contender

The New England Free Jacks played some beautiful rugby on their way to a handsome 50-3 win over NOLA Gold on Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium, Quincy.

The pick of the tries surely went to winger Paula Balekana, who scored one of the tries of 2023. The Fijian teamed up with scrum-half John Poland nicely on the way to the try line, with the pair producing the full works of deft grubber kicks and offloads.

The try actually came about following some pretty slick play from NOLA Gold, particularly some lightening quick hands from fullback Dougie Fife. But when winger Harley Wheeler loosely threw the ball in order to remain in the field of play, New England centre Le Roux Malan pounced on the loose ball to ignite the sumptuous counter attack.

This was one of two tries for Balekana, who helped the Free Jacks continue their dominance of the Eastern Conference.
