Rugby league star red carded for taking law into his own hands after high tackle

St Helens and Huddersfield might well have broken a record at the weekend for the most illegal play packed into a 20 second period.

In a Super League encounter at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday, Huddersfield’s Joe Greenwood was red carded for elbowing St Helens’ Matty Lees. But that only tells half the story.

The elbow came after Lees shot out the line to make contact with the head of Greenwood with his shoulder. That provoked Greenwood to throw the elbow and pandemonium ensued from there with players piling into a mass brawl on the floor. This resulted in Greenwood being dismissed, but it is understandable if he was slightly irked by the tackle.

Take a look at the brawl:

St Helens came away 32-18 winners from the match, which leaves the defending Super League champions in third place in the league, four points behind league leaders the Catalan Dragons with six rounds remaining.
