The time when Carlos Spencer and his team utterly humiliated the Crusaders

Super Rugby was once undoubtedly THE coolest rugby division in the world. This try from Carlos Spencer in 2004 is evidence of it in all it’s glory.

Back in 2004, the Blues were a completely different animal to the Blues team of 2020.

To give you an idea of just how good the 2004 team was, here are some of the players in their squad.

  • Carlos Spencer
  • Jerome Kaino
  • Doug Howlett
  • Keven Mealamu
  • Isa Nacewa
  • Joe Rokocoko
  • Ali Williams
  • Tony Woodcock

Such an insanely talented Blues team,

The team had so much flair in their squad that they could afford to have a bit of arrogance in their team. New Zealand maverick and flair star Carlos Spencer was the main man in this team during this time.

When they played in Christchurch in 2004, the men in Blue won 38-29, however it was this try from Spencer that enraged and amazed rugby fans around the world.

Spencer and Rokocko combined well to score, but it was the celebration from the 10 that is the peak of rugby arrogance…

After Spencer crossed the try line, he and his team, rather than touch the ball down, decided to walk all the way into the corner of the pitch to ensure the humiliation of the Crusaders was complete.

In typically flamboyant fashion Spencer, rather than run down the clock in the dying moments, instigated a 100m movement by flinging an audacious pass on his own tryline and then completed the daring attack by casually strolling to the corner of the in-goal zone to dot the ball down.
