This was surely the most pointless five minutes of rugby ever
The Highlanders’ opening round clash with the Blues in round one of this year’s Super Rugby Pacific finished with what will surely be the most bizarre five minutes of the season.
The Blues had blitzed their way to a 60-20 lead come the final play of the game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, meaning all the Highlanders had to play for was a scrap of pride and all the Blues had to play for was to rub their rivals’ noses in the dirt slightly more. Nothing else could be won or loss in terms of bonus points, and that showed.
Both sides proceeded to play five minutes of lacklustre faffery, loaded with mistake after mistake as possession seemed to flip-flop between either side. It all seemed worth it though when Martín Bogado was put in for a try from 60 metres out on 86 minutes. However, the try did not even stand!
