50-cap All Blacks veteran launches inexplicable attack on Faf de Klerk

Where do we begin with Aaron Cruden’s red card on Saturday in Japan Rugby League One?

First, he might have entered the ruck at the side. Second, it is not entirely conclusive that Yokohama Canon Eagles No9 Faf de Klerk had his hands on the ball. And lastly, and most importantly, it was an absolutely outrageous shoulder to the head of the Springboks scrum-half. All in all that makes a very illegal challenge and was rightfully a red card.

It was not a debut to remember therefore for the 50-cap All Black, who was making his first appearance for Tokyo Sungoliath having made the move from the Kobelco Kobe Steelers. In fact, he only lasted 18 minutes. But this was a red card all day long, and Cruden did not have any complaints when he was dismissed. Cruden and de Klerk did shake hands as the former All Black left the field.
