5. Hogg comes inches from glory against All Blacks
This match back in 2017 was a bittersweet day for the Scots at Murrayfield.
The home side had played out of their skins against the reigning World Champions to sit just five points adrift going into the games final play.
We then watched on in amazement as full-back Stuart Hogg – cut through the New Zealand defence on a blistering run to the line only to be shoved into touch inches short of the whitewash.
This one was painfully close for Scotland as the score finished 17-22
4. Wales put 51 points on sorry Scotland in 2014 Six Nations
This was a true thumping for Scott Johnson’s side in the last match of his ill-fated spell as interim coach.
A Stuart Hogg red card in the first half was catastrophic for the Scots as they went on to concede a barrage of tries on the way to one of their heaviest Six Nations defeats.
Ouch!
3. Japan dump Scotland out of 2019 World Cup
This wound still hasn’t healed for Gregor Townsend’s men who had a forgettable World Cup in 2019.
After an opening round defeat to Ireland, Scotland needed a convincing win over tournament hosts Japan to have any chance of progressing in the tournament.
Despite a strong comeback late on in the clash, the Scots couldn’t do enough to avert an early tournament exit as they ran as 28-21 losers on the day.

2. England put Scotland to the sword at Twickenham
A week before this encounter, England had struggled to beat Italy in a famous win over the Azzuri in 2017.
Conor O’Shea’s side had bamboozled Eddie Jones’s side with some unusual tactics. In light of this result – many felt that the Scot’s could spring an upset at the home of English Rugby.

1. Scotland lose out on World Cup semi-final after controversial refereeing decision
It was only ever going to be this wasn’t it.
Greg Laidaws men had put in a fantastic performance against a strong Wallaby side back in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final.
With only a minute left on the clock, the Scots led by a one-point margin with the scores at 35-34.
Then came one of the most controversial refereeing decisions of all time as Craig Joubert penalised a Scottish player for being offside. Joubert stated after the game that he was not able to refer to the TMO to check this decision.
Bernard Foley kicked the match-winning penalty for Australia that sent the Wallabies into the last four.
What really put salt in the wound for Scottish fans was the way the referee ran off the field after the final whistle.
