The camera angle that does not look good for Bernard Foley
The vast majority of the rugby world seems to be on Australia fly-half Bernard Foley’s side when it comes to the free kick that was awarded against him by referee Mathieu Raynal in the final minute of the Bledisloe Cup Test against the All Blacks on Thursday.
The All Blacks eventually scored from the resulting scrum, giving them the win and ensuring they retained the Bledisloe Cup for another year.
Only 39 seconds elapsed between the time Raynal blew the whistle to give the Wallabies a penalty and he blew the whistle to award the All Blacks the free kick, which is maybe why there are so many people confused by what happened. Even though Foley did not exactly take the kick quickly after he was told time on, no one would deny that stuff like this happens every match.
However, one angle seems to show that Foley’s teammates were well aware of what was going on, and were wary of giving a free kick away. An angle from the side of the pitch shows the Wallabies back line screaming at their No10 to take the kick moments before the referee blew his whistle. This does not look good for Foley, and after the whistle had blown Lalakai Foketi, Len Ikitau and Andrew Kellaway all looked exasperated. While Foley’s teammates could clearly see that time was running out, it was still a strange call nevertheless by Raynal as it is so rare to penalise players for time wasting.
