Hooker kicking 50:22 is as fascinating as it is disturbing
There is something about watching forwards doing backs’ jobs and backs doing forwards’ jobs that is just disturbing.
Seeing a back in a scrum or lineout is unsettling, but maybe not as unsettling as seeing a hooker kick a 50:22. Therefore watch Bordeaux Begles hooker Maxime Lamothe’s recent antics with caution.
The Bordeaux hooker pulled off an impressive grubber 50:22 on Saturday in his side’s 40-10 victory over the reigning Top 14 champions Montpellier. It unsurprisingly received quite a reception from the home crowd. Take a look:

As impressive as this was, Lamothe was only trying to emulate fellow hooker Jamie George, who just weeks ago went a step further than kicking a 50:22 by producing a sumptuous grubber assist for his teammate Sean Maitland in the Heineken Champions Cup against Lyon. George’s kick was not too dissimilar to Lamothe’s, although it was just inside the Lyon half. But this is a further sign that hookers are taking over.
Take a look at George’s kick:
