Analyst shows why the jackal is one of the Springboks’ greatest weapons

South Africa’s Kwagga Smith has had to deal with plenty of doubts over his size for many years now, and though he has been in and around the Springboks camp for a while, it is only this year that he has answered many of his critics.

The Boks’ No7 has been in sensational form for much of 2021, and has helped fill a huge hole left by Pieter-Steph du Toit. Though he is a different player stylistically to the 2019 World Rugby player of the year, he has been mightily effective, particularly at the breakdown.

The breakdown is an area of real strength for the Springboks, and Geraint Davies, also known as GDD Coaching, recently explained what is so special about the South African jackal, describing it as the “jewel” in the Bok defence.
