Clear-cut Ireland red card inexplicably missed immediately in front of referee
Whether you thought that Freddie Steward deserved his red card against Ireland on Saturday or not, the standard was set by referee Jaco Peyper. That is perhaps what makes it all the more baffling that Ireland were able to clearly make contact with the head of England’s Lewis Ludlam in the second half with absolutely no punishment.
A video has been shared on social media which shows Ireland lock James Ryan smash into the face of Ludlam with his shoulder in a ruck when the flanker was caught in a compromised position. And to make matters even worse, Peyper was just a metre away from the incident.
If Steward deserved a red card, it is hard to claim that Ryan did not as well. Take a look:
