Israel Folau features in first interview for Catalan Dragons

Israel Folau featured for his first interview for Rugby League outfit the Catalan Dragons today. In the video we can also see the former Australian star training in what we believe are the first images of him playing at the club.

Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia for his homophobic comments on social media back in 2019.

The club released a short video of him training, this is not the interview that he did…

The coach for the Catalan Dragons spoke about how when he saw Israel Folau training that he looks fit, but he is not Rugby League fit yet. Rugby League players are notoriously known for their brilliant fitness so it will take Folau several weeks to get to the level that he needs to be at.

Super League clubs are furious with Folau’s recruitment as they believe it not only compromises the league and its values but also runs the risk of sponsors withdrawing.

Dragons coach Steve McNamara said: “We knew it would be controversial.

Israel Folau said this at the start of this interview…

“Yeah it’s exciting, it’s been 10 years since I stopped playing Rugby League and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of a great organisation and team in the Catalan Dragons and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the boys.”

The former Rugby Union star also spoke about how he missed the team comradery and environment that came with playing with a rugby team.

Folau won’t be out of sorts in Rugby League, a sport where he used to regularly dominate before he went to Rugby Union in 2010. The controversial figure will not feature for the Dragons for up to a month as he trains with the club in an attempt to increase his fitness.

Here is his first interview with his new club…
