Quins centres miss out on England squad one day after three sensational tries

Eddie Jones announced his 36-player England squad today for an October mini-camp, and despite some players’ best efforts over the weekend there are some interesting omissions.

Harlequins do not come off too well with the squad, with only fly-half Marcus Smith and uncapped hooker Jack Walker making the group, with Alex Dombrandt listed as unavailable due to injury. Members of previous squads, Danny Care, Joe Marchant and Luke Northmore, all miss out despite the latter two impressing on Sunday against Exeter Chiefs in the Gallagher Premiership. This was part of one of the all time great Premiership games, where Quins overturned a 31-7 half time deficit to be leading 42-38 in the last play of the game, only for Exeter to snatch it at the death.

The game might have come too late to change Jones’ mind, but both Marchant and Northmore gave it a shot with try scoring displays. Northmore actually bagged two tries, and these were enough to catch anyone’s attention. He showed some great pace to run the first in from 70 metres out, while he burst through the clutches of two tacklers for his second. Take a look at both:

Marchant, playing on the wing on this occasion, also got in on the action soon after, producing one of the classiest and most composed finished you will see this season:
