Sad scenes as Bastareaud left screaming in agony on pitch

French great Matthieu Bastareaud was left rolling around on the ground in agony after suffering a brutal injury in the Top 14.

Playing against his former side Toulon, Bastaureaud appeared to slip on the way into contact.

The converted No.8’s knee just seemed to buckle underneath, in what could well be an ACL injury. If it is, it could potentially threaten the French man’s career, given he’s already 33.

It rounded off a pretty poor day in rugby union. Due to six confirmed Covid-19 cases in the Barbarian’s men’s team (four players and two members of staff), the Professional Game Testing Oversight Group advised that the fixture scheduled to be played against Samoa was unable to proceed.

An RFU statement read: “We appreciate that this is an extremely disappointing situation for the many fans due to attend, but the safety of all members of both teams is our priority.

“Following consultation with the Barbarians Committee and South Africa, the fixture between Barbarians Women and Springbok Women’s XV will now move to the 2.30pm KO and all tickets purchased are valid for this match. The match will be broadcast live on BBC 1 with coverage starting at 2pm.

“A full automatic refund will be made to all ticket holders however, fans are encouraged to attend the Barbarians Women and Springbok Women’s XV.”

It’s now the second Barbarians game in a row that has been cancelled at the last moment, which will make it harder to promote the fixture next season.
