Siya Kolisi is barely able to hold back launching verbal tirade at referee

Sharks and South Africa captain Siya Kolisi was not a happy man on Saturday as his side faced the Bulls at Kings Park, and rightly so.

That is because the flanker was penalised for obstruction in the build up to a wonderful team try, scored by scrum-half Jaden Hendrikse in the United Rugby Championship clash. The try came late in the match when the Sharks were already leading 40-20, and saw Hendrikse dart around the blindside from a ruck to score in the corner. However, after a lengthy TMO review, it was deemed that Kolisi had prevented fullback Johan Goosen from making a tackle by driving him backwards from the ruck.

It was pretty harsh, as Kolisi had produced what looked like a regulation clearout at a ruck. So it is understandable that he was pretty gobsmacked when referee Marius van der Westhuizen said that he drove the player back “three or four metres”.

“Four metres?!” was Kolisi’s immediate response, before saying there was no way he drove him back that far. However, the referee said that there was no debate, and the Boks’ captain had to bite his tongue and walk off. But he was unlucky there.

In the end, it didn’t matter as the Sharks came away 47-20 winners.
