Cheslin Kolbe shows absolutely no mercy to poor prop attempting miss pass
There is a reason why tighthead props do not attempt three-man miss passes, but once in a while a player has to find out why the hard way. Stade Francais’ Paul Alo-Emile was the prop that was taught that sobering lesson at the weekend.
Up against Toulon at the Stade Mayol in the Top 14, the Samoa tighthead attempted what would have been a fairly audacious pass for any player on the pitch, let alone a 136kg front rower. His looping right hand pass did not quite find it’s destination. It was actually so off course that it is hard to work out who his intended recipient actually was. But what came next from Cheslin Kolbe was equally very special.
The South Africa wing sprinted out the line to catch the ball on the volley perfectly. The ball flew 25 metres and sat up just the other side of the try line, allowing the World Cup winner to score. It was a passage of play that went from the ridiculous to the sublime very quickly.
This was not exactly the time for speculative passes from props from their own half either, if there is ever a time, as Toulon only had a one point lead at that point. They did, however, go on to win 37-9.
