‘Rugby’s toughest pre-season session’
As the Hurricanes prepare for the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, which begins at the end of February, they staked their claim to having rugby’s toughest pre-season session with their annual ‘Surf to Peak’ challenge recently.
The challenge sees the players sprint for one kilometre from one end of Lyall Bay in Wellington to the other. That is followed by a 25 kilometre cycle around the peninsula. Finally, the players have another one kilometre run to the top of Mount Victoria.
In the latest episode of World Rugby’s ‘Rugby Fit’, fitness influencer Logan Dodds joined the Hurricanes for the challenge.
The time to beat was fullback Ruben Love’s 57:50 from last year. Love did not add the 2023 title to his 2022 victory, with centre Billy Proctor taking first place this year.
Take a look at the challenge:
The Hurricanes are not the only team that are put through a daunting challenge like this in preseason. The Gallagher Premiership’s Northampton Saints also have the ‘Blakiston Challenge’, which has been won by England lock Alex Coles two years on the bounce.
