Danny Care shows his class after missing out on England squad
After missing out on Eddie Jones’ England squad for the upcoming autumn internationals, Danny Care has been all class and has been singing the praises of his No9 rivals.
Ben Youngs, Raffi Quirke and Jack van Poortvliet are the trio Jones has opted for, with the latter earning his first cap in the summer in Australia where he played alongside Care.
As a guest on BT Sport’s Rugby Tonight on Monday, Care was very magnanimous after being dropped and showed what a fan he is of his competitors.
He said: “So I didn’t get picked for this for this campaign, which I’m fairly used to, but I’ve got a bit of experience in that and he’s pick three great scrum-halves. So I van Poortvliet had a brilliant summer, took his opportunity really well. Raffi Quirke I’ve been championing him to be in for a while even if it was at my expense because I think he’s a wonderful rugby player. And obviously, the experienced head of Ben Youngs in there. So, you’ve got three scrum-halves, all fighting for two spots. I’m just trying to keep my head down trying to play well for Quins, trying to win some games and if an opportunity comes for me to play for England again then I’d snap his hand off.”
Care is not the only elite scrum-half to miss out on the England camp though, as Northampton Saints’ form star Alex Mitchell is also absent. With the injured Harry Randall also in the picture, England have plenty of options at No9, which Care discussed:
“It’s great competition. Alex has been very unlucky to not play more times more times, and he’s the heartbeat in that Northampton side. You saw, I think, two tries yesterday, a couple of assists as well. So he’ll find himself very unfortunate but with Raffi and Jack and Ben Youngs, he’s going to have to keep playing consistently well, keep knocking on the door to get an opportunity because it’s an exciting back line.”
